The Speed of Life

Once upon a  time I used to say to my children, "I remember when there were no calculators, no computers, no internet and no mobile phones!" Now I'm saying "I remember when Social Media was just Facebook!"

It seems like the speed of technological change is phenomenal, but is it really? Hasn't it always been pretty fast? As marketers, sometimes I feel we struggle to keep up. The way consumers access information and initiate the buying process has shifted dramatically with the rapid growth of mobile devises and proliferation of social media sites.

Since Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn have joined the conversations, pictures are shared on Instagram and Pinterest, Google+ competes with Facebook and everything must be seen on YouTube.

Digital marketing has fast become the prime concern of marketers although I firmly believe that there is still a place for print - it's not dead yet! Social media is at the heart of any digital strategy and if you don't have a digital marketing strategy, well you need to get one!

GoToWebinar have published an Expert Report Digital on Trial: Harness 2012’s Key Trends to Seize Opportunities in 2013. Their research shows that the majority of marketers surveyed intend on increasing their social media budgets as the move towards turning conversations into conversions continues to grow.

So if you're not yet up to speed on social media, you need to get a wriggle on because you're being left behind. As for me, I'm booked on to a Google+ training day. As for my children, they no longer use Facebook - it's not cool when your parents are on it.
